Why We Get Back Pain During Pregnancy

If you are reading this, chances are that you are struggling a little bit with some discomfort and pain as your baby grows and your body changes.

During pregnancy, especially during the second and the third trimester it is not uncommon for women to experience lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain or even just general stiffness and tightness around her surrounding muscles including lower back, hamstrings, calves, hips and thigh muscles.

Causes of lower back pain during pregnancy

  1. Your body produces a hormone called “relaxin” which makes your body looser to accommodate your growing baby and also to prepare you to give birth.  Therefore, there is a lack of stability around your pelvic girdle and your lumbar spine.
  2. There’s the extra weight.  Women on average gain around 13kg during their pregnancy, which means more load on your spine.
  3. Your posture changes.  As your body expands and becomes heavier, it pulls your lumbar spine forward and this increases the compression to your lower back joints and also increases the tightness in your surrounding muscles mainly lower back muscles, hip muscles, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves.
